Step 2 of 6: Network Setup for Windows XP Pro

DO NOT INSERT THE USB KEY UNTIL DIRECTED BELOW

Network setup

You are now ready to set up your network but in order to do that the following settings must be done on EACH computer in your network. Doing the settings as follows will both make your network run more smoothly and make remote support easier if you ever need Tech Support so that they know how your are configured.

Local security policy network settings

Click the Start button in the bottom left corner of your screen and go to Control Panel.

You will select the following options/tabs:

  • Administrative Tools
  • Local Security Policy
  • Local Policies
  • User Rights Assignment

Check these settings:

  • Access this computer from the network - Everyone
  • Deny access to this computer from the network - Leave Blank
  • Deny logon as a batch job - Leave Blank
  • Deny logon as a service - Leave Blank
  • Deny logon locally - Leave Blank

Now select Security Policies

  • Scroll down on the right and click on Microsoft Network Server amountÃf?15
  • Double click on this and change to "0" then Click "OK"
  • Exit out of that screen and then hit the "Back Arrow" in the top left corner, you will be back in the control panel.

Go to Date and Time

  • Verify date/time/am-pm/ and time zone. Then click "OK".

Double click on Display

  • Change Theme to "Windows Classic"
  • Click on Screen Saver and change screen saver to "None"
  • Click on Power Management and change Power Scheme to "Always On"
  • Change Turn off Monitor to "Never"
  • Click "OK"
  • Click "OK" again

Click on Folder Options

  • Click on View
  • Toward the bottom of the white box click the radio button Show all files
  • UNCHECK Hide Extensions
  • Click "OK"

Double Click on Network Connections

  • Click on Advanced
  • Click on Network Identification
  • Click On Change
  • In your network you need to designate a Server computer and then the rest should be named Term1,2 and so on. Where it says 'Computer Name" put the appropriate name.
  • Click "OK"
  • Click "OK"
  • Click "OK"
  • It will then ask you to restart choose "NO"

Set IP Address

Right click on the Local Area Connection icon

  • Go to Properties
  • In the white area of the screen you will see which components you are using for your network. You need to click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and then click Properties.
  • You will choose to Use the following IP address. Setting the IP address, like setting the computer name, needs to be consistent throughout the network.
  • For the server, you will enter 192.168.1.100 with the subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.
  • This will be the only changes you will make here.
  • Setting the IP of the terminal:
    • The IP address of the terminals will depend on the terminal number. Example of IP addresses for 3 terminal system.
    • Server 192.168.1.100
    • Term 1 192.168.1.101
    • Term 2 192.168.1.102
    • Term 3 192.168.1.103
  • Notice that all numbers stay the same with the exception of the last number which changes based on the terminal number.
  • The Subnet Mask will be the same on all terminals.
  • Once you have set the IP address for the terminal click "OK" on the IP page. This will bring you back to the Local Area Connection page.
  • There is an option for "Show icon in taskbar when connected" You will check this option.
  • Click "OK" to save your work.

Double Click on System

  • Go to Advanced and click the button for Adjust for Best Performance.
  • Click "OK"
  • Click "OK"
  • Click on Task Bar
  • Click on Start Menu
  • Click the button for Classic View.
  • Click "OK"
  • Click on User Accounts
  • Click on Guest
  • Then click on Turn Guest Account On
  • Close this Window.
  • Click on Windows Firewall
  • Click the "Off" button and then click "OK"

You can now close the Control Panel Window. You are more than half way to being up and running.

All of the steps listed above must be followed for all terminals. If you have more than one terminal you will need to attach your Network Hub and Network cable to all terminals. Once the hub is in place and attached to all terminals on the network, you should be able to go to "My Network Places" and see the other computers on your network.
